Novice Notions
Final Preparation
I have previously mentioned that the cheerleading squad at SMS has been getting ready for competition. It’s getting close, a week from Saturday. We are diligently working to get everything perfect for competition.
Last Saturday, the Blue cheerleading squad from Breathitt was in Bowling Green for the state cheerleading competition, so we got to go to their gym and use their mats to practice on. That’s a good practice time for us, because the floor at the competition is on a matted floor, too. It is also much safer to practice the tumbling and stunts we do on this surface.
Lots Going On
When I started writing this column a few years ago, I was told that I could write about what I wanted to write about, as often as I could write. I thought when I started that it would be hard to come up with something every week, but except for a few times, I have managed to write each week. This week I don’t have much extra time so this will probably be brief. Let me give you my schedule for this week and you will know what I mean.
Our Leader and Our Friend
Lisa Banks is an important person in my life, as well as most of my friend’s lives. She is my youth leader, and also one of my friends.
Lisa, formally known as Lisa Turner, has gotten pretty close to me and my friends over the past year or so. She started out by helping with our youth group class at church, which she is now the leader of. Now she spends more time with us in our regular lives. For instance, she goes to Kendall’s basketball games and Brittany’s softball games. She has even shown up to watch me cheer.
14th Region High School Cheerleading Competition
Last Sunday, January 27, 2008, was the KAPOS 14th Region High School Cheerleading Competition. As most of you probably know, I’m a cheerleader at SMS, so I was in attendance at this very exciting competition.
Breathitt High School was hosting the competition this year, so the event was held at the Fairce O. Woods Coliseum. Hack Hudson, the cheerleading coach at Breathitt asked our coach if the SMS cheerleaders could come and help. Several members of our squad got there two hours early.
Fun School Work at SMS
In our classes at SMS, lessons are not just writing and reading from books. We usually have a lot of hands-on projects due at school. Lately, with school just starting back, we have been trying to get back in the swing of things by doing some of these projects.
In language arts class, we started off the new year by doing a project on the book, Huck Finn by Mark Twain. We watched a movie that closely resembled the book and was given a chance to choose from several assignments based on the story. I chose to do a collage of an adjective describing one of the characters or setting in the movie or book.
Getting Ready for Competition
As the new year begins at Sebastian Middle School, many students are getting ready for several competitions. As a member of the SMS Cheerleaders and the Academic Team’s Future Problem Solvers, my teammates and I have been working hard to prepare for these events.
Basketball, Caleb Style
If you have ever had a little boy or girl, chances are they have played in some type of sport, whether it is soccer, T-ball, or basketball. Caleb played T-ball last spring, and it was a lot of fun watching him. This winter he is trying BYF basketball. It is very entertaining as well.
The UK Arboretum
What do you think of when you think about the University of Kentucky? Do you think about basketball or football? Well, as most of you know, I’m involved in a program called “Girls in Research” that is sponsored by UK. My friend Kelsey Minix is also in this program. Last Saturday one of our Saturday sessions was held at a part of UK that is unknown to many, The University of Kentucky Arboretum.
The Winter Dance at SMS
Friday, December 7, 2007 was a special day for the students at SMS. Not only was it the end of a week of school work, but it was a time for the students to stay after school with their friends and enjoy the Winter Dance.
The Winter Dance was sponsored by the SMS Cheerleaders in the SMS Cafeteria.
The End of a Great Season
Friday, November 30, 2007 will be marked down in the record books of Breathitt County football. Written down beside it will be some of the most dreaded words, “Belfry defeats Breathitt.”
The trip to our favorite place in the world started off bad. We came upon a wreck on Highway 205. We only had to sit in traffic for about 10 minutes.
