The Voice has learned that Tim Bobrowski will resign as Principal of Sebastian Middle School, to take on a position with the Owsley County Schools. Sources say Bobrowski announced his resignation Tuesday, but while no official word has come from the Breathitt County Schools, Superintendent Arch Turner said in a telephone interview Wednesday morning, “I think it will happen.”

Compared to last year at this time, the summertime weather’s been pretty decent to garden growers in Breathitt County. Unlike the drought that dried up several crops in 2008, most local gardeners report this year’s crops are in good shape.

However, as July is about to turn into August, those who till the soil are turning their heads up to the sky.

That’s because those precious showers of rain are becoming fewer and farther between. And it’s those drops from up above that are vital to their crops.

Four projects authorized for Breathitt County with the blessing of the Kentucky General Assembly were given top priority and approved by the Breathitt County Fiscal Court at their regular meeting on Tuesday.

The total funding for those four projects comes up to $836,479, and will be built during the 2008-09 Fiscal Year with money appropriated from the state’s Local Government Economic Development Fund. The projects were specific line-item projects listed in House Bill 410 that was passed earlier this year.

PRIDE education funds approved

A total of $200,000 for Kentucky PRIDE was approved Monday by a key Congressional subcommittee, according to 5th District Congressman “Hal” Rogers. The funding will be used for environmental education and awareness programs to students in Breathitt County and throughout Eastern and Southern Kentucky. The money will come from the Fiscal Year 2009 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill. In a statement released from his Washington office, Congressman Rogers announced, “These critical funds will help further our earth science education efforts, and encourage stewardship of our natural resources…The PRIDE program has inspired a younger generation of Kentuckians to value their surroundings and empowered them to take responsibility for the future of our region.” The main activities of PRIDE are to improve the region’s waterways, clean-up illegal dumps, and promote environmental education and awareness.

Often many liberals attempt to promote abnormal social, cultural and immoral behavior by touting inclusion, diversity and political correctness at the expense of common sense, reality and the truth. They not only attempt to convince you to accept abnormal personal behavior and as my well-respected friend, Owen Collins, indicated in his recent column, make you a participant and considerate a normal and decent behavior.

None can deny that America’s colleges and universities in recent years are increasingly attempting to indoctrinate the young minds of our sons and daughters with a radical social, cultural and political philosophy that is totally inconsistent with their parents heretofore views on almost every social, moral, religious and political issue.

As I read Bobby’s article last week, I was left with the impression that Bobby had joined the Swift Boaters or had organized his own. His technique is so close to Karl Rove’s Swift Boat ploy which defeated John Kerry that maybe he should be referred to him as “Swift Boat Bobby”. The way he attacks Obama is very much like the way that the Bush Mafia attacked John Kerry under the name of Swift Boaters. It was proven later that the entire plot was fabricated. The way that the Republicans can fabricate indicates that they should go into the manufacturing business rather than politics.

Let me say upfront that I am not anti-medical or anti-pharmaceutical. Many of us are alive today with a
reasonable quality of life thanks to the research and progress in both of these fields. And, I have some
understanding of the heavy costs of bringing medicine to market. But what happened to me recently is baffling.

I’ve been absent from the Voice for the past few weeks due to a vacation into the southwest of the United States with Richard Jett Tours, now operated by Lillian Jett Trent. I must say that the vacation was wonderful. It was filled with many memories that I’m sure will be with me for a long time. The furthest we traveled was to Las Vegas, Nevada. Among the windmills, miles and miles of corn, and beautiful scenery, I saw something else; something we won’t see around here: Signs that went against the idea that “Coal keeps the lights on.” I’m sure you’ve seen the slogan in support of coal all over the place. It’s on bumper stickers, posters, and billboards.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Beginning today (July 31st), Martha’s popular Slick Rock Hollow columns will listed in the category to your left as it should be…under “Slick Rock Hollow”.  To get this week’s column, and future columns, just take your mouse to the left, and go under “Subscribe Now” until you see “Slick Rock Hollow”.  From this point on, all her present and future columns will be seen there.

Tina and I along with my friend Jay went to see some 80’s pop bands perform at the famous First Avenue club in downtown Minneapolis last Sunday night. First Avenue is the club featured in the 80’s movie “Purple Rain” starring Prince and is where he got his start playing. The building itself is very old and originally started as a Greyhound bus station in the late 1930’s. The location is perfect as it sits right across the street from the Hard Rock Café and Target Center arena on the corner of 7th St and 1st Avenue.
