“Turn On The Lite”, by Donna Fugate
The sun is smiling; birds are singing; and the aroma of fresh cut grass is intermingling with the sweet scent of blooming blossoms. Yes, it’s that time of year when God awakens nature. And do you want to know one of the best ways we can enjoy God’s wondrous awakening? By getting off our backsides and simply putting one foot in front of the other for a nice leisurely walk. Regrettably, that’s easier said than done.
Sure I know the commonly known benefits of walking which include—managing weight, controlling blood pressure, decreasing risk of heart attack, boosting good cholesterol, and lowering the risk of stroke. There are also other benefits that are not-so-commonly-known like—reducing risk of breast cancer and type 2 diabetes (who woulda thought that?), protecting against hip fracture, and even preventing depression, colon cancer, constipation, osteoporosis, and impotence; not to mention walking can lower our stress levels (I for one can certainly benefit from lower stress levels). Phew! Now that’s a whole lotta benefit to be gained from embarking on a simple stroll.
Unfortunately when I get home in the afternoons, I’m too pooped to promenade. Once I make my way through the front door, I just want to collapse. On the other hand, when Jack crosses the threshold, he barely takes time to plant a quick peck on my cheek, before he’s ready to pound the pavement for his late afternoon amble. I try to explain to Jack that I’ve worked hard all day and deserve a rest. But he just goes into his, “You better walk to stay in shape,” mode. And as much as I hate to admit it, Jack’s right. We all need to try to live a healthy lifestyle. That’s why… you better walk now, or forever hold your pace.
