“Don’t Sell Me Short”, by Andy Mitchell
I have a great electric company. It seems that whenever the electric is off, which is a rare occasion in the first place; it is promptly turned back on in as little time as possible. I have no complaints with my electric company. However, have you ever noticed that the electricity goes off at the “best” times? It’s as although the electricity can choose when it goes off and waits for you to be really busy doing something that requires the vital product.
Here are some of my favorite importune times the electricity chooses to take a break: Reading a book, doing homework, working on a desktop computer, cooking, cleaning, ANY time at night when you aren’t asleep, the night before a big exam that finds you studying by the trustworthy lamp, during the winter (those of you with electric heat especially), watching the finale of your favorite TV show when the important question, “The father is”? is asked and before you get an answer the electric goes off, during a root canal, watching the end of a movie when they say, “The killer is..,” late at night right after you’ve watched a terribly scary movie, when you’re all out of candles, when you have company from out of state, and when you’re starving and have just put something into the microwave and it doesn’t even get hot and you’re forced to eat Rice Krispies; sweet, cold Rice Krispies. Don’t get me wrong, I love this cereal, but when you have no heat, an empty stomach, and no idea when you’ll be able to see the couch that is two inches in front of your face again, you don’t feel much like snap, crackle, or pop.
It just amazes me how much we depend upon electricity. We depend upon this valuable tool to do even the most mundane and simplistic tasks and we do not even think about it. We take it for granted. Everyone’s guilty of it; I don’t think about it much until we don’t have it for a couple of hours. We just always assume that when we flick that switch on the wall, we will have a room filled with light. It’s hard to imagine life without electricity in these modern times. Like I said before, the electric company does a wonderful job of keeping the lights on. We need to conserve this valuable resource and appreciate the comforts it allows us to have.
-Cheers
