Easter Traditions
Last Sunday, many families practiced their annual rituals in celebration of Easter. Easter is a special day for my family and we have traditions of our own that we observe each year.
Our first tradition is attending church. Even though we always attend church on Sunday, Easter Sunday is always a special day. Then we all usually meet at my Aunt Lisa’s house after church. This is the first time most of our family had met together since Christmas. It’s my mom’s side of the family, and her three sisters and their kids are usually there. I really love them.
The first part of the afternoon started off with us eating. Everyone brings different things. This year’s menu included pasta salad, taco salad, pizza, ham sandwiches and potato soup. Dessert was Aunt Nora’s banana pudding , Aunt Lisa’s dirt cake and Aunt Dana’s apple dumplings. Some of the family played video games and others watched WKU and some of the other basketball games, while my nephew, Caleb, was coloring eggs. Coloring eggs with Aunt Lisa is another tradition that has been around in our family for many years. All the kids have enjoyed doing this.
While Caleb was coloring the eggs, my cousin, Brayton, dressed up in an Easter Bunny suit. He had gotten dressed outside and knocked on the back door. I don’t think Caleb still believes in the Easter Bunny, but we still humor him. He hugged the Easter Bunny and had his picture taken with him. After the Easter Bunny left, we went outside and hid the eggs Caleb had colored. The Easter Bunny slipped out of his outfit so he could help us hide the eggs. Since we couldn’t take the suit inside without Caleb seeing it, we hid it in one of the cars and Caleb just about found it. Caleb was ready to open the door to the car to look for hidden eggs, but Brayton saw him just in time. While some of the others distracted Caleb and led him to another part of the yard, we grabbed the suit and ran with it to the house. The Easter Bunny’s identity is safe for another year.
All in all, Easter was great again this year. I was able to spend it with people I love, celebrating an event that is very special to us.
