SMS at Competition
I have recently told you about a competition the cheerleading squad at SMS would be competing in. That competition was held last Saturday, and it was as exciting as I had hoped.
Last Friday was the 55th Boys’ District Champ-ionship, Breathitt versus Jackson, and there was no way I was going to miss it, especially since my cousin Gentry was going to be playing for the Tigers. The rest of my squad went down to Lexington, where the competition was held, right after school to check into our hotel rooms and go to the mall. I stayed with my mom to watch the game. And as I’m sure you are aware of, it was a very exciting game. My mom and I traveled to Lexington right after the game and made it to the hotel about 10:30. My hair was already in rollers, so I just hung out at the pool and in my room with Alexia Warren and Beth Griffith, my roommates. We got into bed about midnight, but Beth kept talking, so it was about 12:30 before we actually fell asleep.
We woke up the next morning all very excited, with butterflies fluttering in our stomachs. We went to breakfast about 9 o’clock. I was only able to eat about half of my chocolate chip waffle and just a bite of my hash brown.
When we got to Henry Clay High School, where the competition was, and one side of the gym was packed with people. The first session, which was for all-star squads and gym teams had begun. We were amazed by the pee wee cheer squads which were performing when we got there. They were all adorable and some of them performed at a very high skill level.
Session Two, which was for school squads, finally began. Eventually, it was time for us to get out on the mats and do our routine in front of the packed gym. Cheerleading in front of a crowd is the biggest adrenaline rush I’ve ever felt. It’s feels amazing. We had a large number of parents, grandparents and friends form Breathitt County there to cheer us on. Except for our county grade school competition, this was the first time many of our squad members had competed. We knew the routine so good, we didn’t even have to think about what we were doing. We just did it. We didn’t mess up, and we didn’t drop any stunts. We did everything perfect.
After it was over, we were all tired and ready to go home. We got to watch a lot of amazing teams and it was a lot of fun. There were about 25 middle school squads that performed and we competed in the advanced division. We ended up getting 6th Place in our division, but don’t think we were disappointed! WE knew we had done everything the best we had ever done it. We are all proud of ourselves and would like to thank our coaches, Kera Ti King and Serita McCoy for giving so time to our squad. We had a great year.
