Daryl Swartzentruber always liked traveling to faraway places.
He developed his wunderlust for trekking by seeing America first. Then, after answering the call to be a missionary, Daryl went to China in 2004. He got there not on a “slow boat” but by a fast plane.
Still, that trip to the land of the Great Wall was a piece of cake, compared to his recent visit to Russia.

Right now a couple of soccer goals sit silently on some property off Route 30 West in Jackson. But by 2009, the acreage that stands empty at this time will be teeming with employees and clients of the Breathitt County Health Department.

He’s gotten accustomed to “the picture business”, as some old-timers call it in Southern California. And with three projects under his belt, Jeffrey Reddick’s pretty busy in Hollywood lately, as he continues his role as a screenwriter, a producer, and an actor of horror movies.

Most of us have day lilies somewhere in our yard. These plants are great bloomers, easy to grow, and relatively free of care, but they do need some attention, especially now that they have finished their early bloom. The old-fashioned orange ones, “tiger-lily” as they are often called, bloom only once, while some of the newer varieties are repeat bloomers.
Most people probably don’t realize this, but the Honey Festival is an ongoing planning project. The Honey Bunch starts making plans as soon as each festival ends. Chairperson Clara Gabbard (aka Queen Bee) was buzzing with information on the 30th Annual Festival. The theme this year is a Red, White and Blue Celebration. This should be the theme for decorations and floats. The big tent will be up and booths will start falling in place in exactly 6 weeks.

Forty-three years and two months. That’s how much time has passed since Lady Bird Johnson found her way to Breathitt County to dedicate a newly constructed building. Not just any building, not by any stretch of the imagination; the building the First Lady of our 36th President of the United States came to dedicate was a structure well ahead of its time, the Breathitt Coliseum. The domed formation, now bearing the name of the coach (Fairce O. Woods) who built the basketball program to a level which demanded such a facility, offered much promise and hope. The Great Society which was being ushered in during the spring of 1964 was designed to do much the same. Lady Bird Johnson passed this way May 21, 1964.
