Hot enough for ya? How about hot and dry enough for ya?
The earth’s thirst was quenched by some rain and thunderstorms that came late Monday and especially on Tuesday. The showers over Breathitt County also helped to break the grip of heat and humidity which made Monday the hottest day so far this year.

As a group of some 20 former students of Evanston School boarded a bus at Camp Lewis last Saturday, Pat Arebalo and Shadelene Campbell went immediately to the back of the bus. Laughing and joking, they recalled when they were the “troublemakers” on a bus over 40 years ago. When those buses were driven by Burl Manns and “Doc” Collins. Buses that would make the long trip to Breathitt High School very early in the morning - and back to Evanston very late in the day.

The idea of a skateboard park in Jackson could be gettting a little closer to reality, as Mayor Mike Miller asked the Jackson Parks Board on Monday evening to explore the possibility of a such a park.
Miller said, “I’ve been up to the one in Knott County. I’ve looked at one that cost $150,000. The other night I looked at another park in Louisville that the Deputy Mayor said cost about $2.5 million. And I understand Bowling Green has one skate park where kids from everywhere go to skate on.”

Their journey begins at Natural Bridge State Park in nearby Powell County. The van carrying six women from Jackson turns left off Route 11 into the Whitleton Campground. The van parks, and out come all six, primed and ready to take on the trail ahead.
From the campground, the half-dozen hikers will take to the Whittleton Branch Trail, then go up to the Whittleton Arch - a landmark that’s along the path that connects Natural Bridge to the Red River Gorge.

Dear Editor:
The history of Breathitt County and the City of Jackson is a shared one - African-American and White. Only in recent years has any interest been expressed in the African-American contributions in this community. The future site for the Breathitt County Museum - once the Breathitt County Jail - was contstructed from the old rock / stone quarry. These rocks and stones were hewed by the hands of African-Americans utilizing the most rudimentary tools. There were many other sites throughout the city and county - churches, schools, and the old city swimming pool.
The big news for us this week is the success of our Radiothon on June 13. As of June 19, we have received $9,405.00. Our Radiothon committee is very pleased with that. There are still about $800.00 in pledges that have not come in. If we could reach $10,000.00, I personally would be very pleased.
