The Jackson Tigers got off to a very slow start last Friday night, February 16, against the Buckhorn Wildcats. Despite good effort by the Tigers after the slow beginning, it may have been a little too late to come back against the hard-playing Wildcats. Jackson dropped this one to the Wildcats of Buckhorn by a score of 60-49. This makes the Tiger’s record go to eight wins and 15 losses as of Monday, February 19.
Senior, Nicole Lutes has been a varsity player for the LadyCats for six years. Her position is forward/center.
She recently signed with Alice Lloyd College to play basketball.
She was escorted by her parents, Jeff and Anna Lutes, her brother Nathan, Grandmothers Martha and Sally and her cousin Kasey Young.

The Breathitt Co. LadyCats opened a 15 point lead at halftime of their game Monday night at Fairce O. Woods Coliseum vs. the Morgan Co. Cougars. After managing a hard fought victory last week in West Liberty, the LadyCats rolled to a 60-38 win on this night.

Breathitt County got another big performance from junior Justin Hollan, who scored 20 points including the game-winning free throw, as the Bobcats overcame the Estill County Engineers in overtime Friday night, 59-58.

For the veteran Wildcat basketball fan there used to be an honored tradition with Kentucky basketball and it was strongly supported by the Commonwealth’s daily newspapers. That being the annual January slump by Coach Joe B. Hall’s teams. It mainly produced a cold shooting streak for Joe B.’s guards which brought Big Blue Nation into suicide mode in some corners of the hoop crazy Bluegrass state.

With three minutes left in the opening quarter, Amanda Southwood scored on an assist from Tiffany Noble giving the Breathitt Co. LadyCats a 12-7 lead in their game vs. the Estill Co. Lady Engineers. Moments later it was a pass form Southwood to Brittany Moore that put the lead at 16-7.
It’s hard to believe that high school’s regular season basketball is coming to a close this weekend and that the district tournament starts Monday night. The season has simply gone by too fast for me. On the other hand, I suppose coaches and players are ready to move on to the big show. Fans are going to be in for some excitement for sure, and don’t be surprised to see some big upsets early on across the region.

That fire occured in the Beech Grove section of the Canoe community during the overnight hours last Thursday. Two persons perished in the blaze, which destroyed the rental house they were staying in.

Two persons perished in the blaze, which destroyed the rental house they were staying in.56-year-old Alfred Combs, Jr. of Jackson, and 48-year-old Kenny Stamper of Dry Ridge (in Grant County) died in the fire, and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Breathitt County Coroner’s Office. Their bodies were later taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for autopsies.
