Just like last month, what to do and where to go for the Junior-Senior Trip this spring led the discussion at this month’s regular meeting of the Jackson Independent School District. The meeting, held last Thursday at the Central Office on Patton Avenue, was moved up two weeks due to the Christmas holiday. And it closed out saying goodbye to John Gambill, as he finishes 12 years as a Board Member.

Every year now, for over twenty of them, a group of volunteers and organizations come together to bring something some Breathitt Countians wouldn’t have otherwise - a Merry Christmas, filled with toys and games, clothes and food for families in need. Sheba McIntosh is one of those volunteers.

EditorTaking a page out of last week’s meeting to start up the new Breathitt County Drug-Free Community Coalition, members of the groups who formed it came to dinner last Thursday to discuss their individual efforts. That way, as Michelle Kilgore of Kentucky River Community Care put it, “It lets us know what everyone’s doing, and where we’re going. As a result, we’re on the same page.”

Each year at Christmas (for at least the past 10 years), students at Breathitt Area Tech Center host a “Christmas Toy Drive” to help a local agency - Interfaith - collect toys to give out to less fortunate families of Breathitt County. The Auto Tech Program, headed up by instructor Jesse Tackett, serves as the drop off point.

Come Monday, January 1st, 2007, a few new rules will take effect at the Breathitt County Court Clerk’s Office.
First, the license fee will be going up five dollars, from $15 to $21. “The fee increase was necessary to keep County Court Clerk’s Offices across Kentucky from having financial difficulties,” said County Court Clerk Tony Watts on Monday. “and the General Assembly passed that increase along, just as they do all these new laws.”

Mrs. Sally E. Dunn from Jackson has been nominated by a former student as one who has shaped and inspired the student’s current achievements.

Each year Kentucky River Properties awards scholarships to Practical Nursing students that demonstrate academic and clinical excellence. Leondra Eady of Jackson is honored with the Outstanding Nursing Student award during the Hazard Community & Technical College Pinning Ceremony. Ms. Eady was recognized for having the highest grade point average in her registered nursing classes held at the Hazard Campus.
