The game looked like it might never end. One whistle followed another as both teams raced up and down the floor, but the winner was never in doubt. Justin Hollan led the Bobcats in scoring with 23 points as the Bobcats defeated the Louisville Brown Bears by a score of 87-62 in a Saturday afternoon game at Fairce O. Woods Coliseum. Coach Steve Bank’s squad had four players in double figures. Freshman big man Dakota Ritchie saw more playing time in this game and scored 10 points. Senior Brandon Hayes broke into the starting lineup for the first time this season and responded with his best game scoring 13 points. Sophomore Ryan Allan seemed to really enjoy the up-tempo game and responded with 11 points and his darting drives to the basket were single-handedly responsible for half of the Bear fouls in the fourth quarter. Freshman point guard Nick Noble tallied 9 points and unveiled an ability to drive to the basket not yet seen this season.

With 12 seconds left in the game and trailing by three points, forward C.K. Howard in-bounded the ball for the Tigers. Howard, using two screens from teammates, circled to the top of the key where he got the pass from Drew Davidson. Howard’s three point try was just short and so were the Tigers who led East Ridge, from Pike Co., most of the game but fell at the end 57-54.

Breathitt County put four players in double figures Tuesday night at Buckhorn as the Bobcats overpowered the Wildcats for a 73-64 victory. The win, the Bobcats’ fourth consecutive, pushes Breathitt’s record to 6-1 going into Friday night’s game with Jackson City.
Junior Justin Hollan scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Bobcats, and Aaron ‘Bull’ Combs along with Brandon Hayes poured in 16 points apiece which propelled Breathitt over a pesky Buckhorn team. Hayes scored nine of his points in the final quarter, which saw the Bobcats build a somewhat comfortable lead midway through the final frame.

Less than a week after the region’s second biggest rivalry, Louisville vs. Kentucky, it’s time for number one. On Friday evening it’s Jackson vs. Breathitt. The game that pits big vs. little; those that have it vs. those that want it. It is the game that figures to fill Fairce O. Woods Coliseum with fans of the Blue and fans of the Gold. The atmosphere will be electric. The bands will be loud. The cheerleaders will be frenetic and some of us will be wishing that the gym had more seats in the middle.

Carmella Lawson and her 40-year-old son Jimmy spent last Saturday morning inside the Breathitt County Shrine Club building at Haddix. Earlier in the day, they made the trip from their home in the Lower Chloe section of Pikeville, and were getting ready for pizza and cake at a Christmas party in the Shrine hall. Jimmy’s eyes are wide-open as he scans the room. “I like to watch TV, and I love Myrtle Beach. But more than anything else for Christmas, I’d like to go to Gatlinburg and ride the Tram.” Jimmy looked at his mother, who then smiled and spoke. “He doesn’t ask for stuff, but he wants on that Tram. I’m afraid of the Tram, but he loves it. He can take his wheelchair and get on it.” Carmella then spoke about her life with Jimmy, who has Spina Bifida. “I’ve raised Jimmy by myself. It’s been hard. He had a stroke and had rehabilitation at Cardinal Hill in Lexington, but he’s worth every bit of it.”

EditorThe Van Meter Gymnasium on the Lees Campus was filled with people last Saturday. Rows of tables, filled with young and old alike eating a big Christmas meal, extended from one end of the basketball floor to the other. On two ends of the floor, volunteers gladly served up turkey with all the trimmings, while an announcer told the crowd to “please help yourself to seconds. There’s plenty for everybody.” The stage floor was piled with hundreds of Christmas gifts for those who registered. And in the center of all that glitter on the stage was a giant Christmas tree - a symbol of what’s good with the holiday season.
