$1,900 raised for St. Jude locally
A “Roadblock” event was held Saturday, October 7, 2006, to raise funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Wanda I. Mullins was glad to report that $1,900, has been raised to help cancer research. $1,000 was collected from the Roadblock event alone. The other $900 came from local businesses and personal donations. During the past five years 83.7 percent of every dollar received by ALSAC/St. Jude has gone to the current or future needs of St. Jude. The hospital’s daily operating costs are $1,146,616, which are primarily covered by public contributions.
Since St. Jude opened in 1962, it has treated children from all 50 states and more than 70 foreign countries. Research finds at St. Jude are shared with doctors and scientists all over the world. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital maintains 60 inpatient beds and treats about 160 patients each day. About 4,700 patients are in active status, most of whom are treated on an outpatient basis.
St. Jude, which is non-sectarian, treats children without regard to race, religion, creed or ability to pay. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. Each St. Jude patient must be referred by a physician, have a disease currently under study at the hospital, be eligible for a current research protocol and, generally, be 18 years old or younger.
Special thanks are extended to all the citizens of Jackson and the Breathitt County area who helped support this special event. Many thanks to the BHS Cheerleaders: Krista Brewer, Becka Campbell, Kayla Gabbard, Tiffany Gabbard, Emily Howard, Megan Kidd, Erica King, Bobbi McIntosh, Kimberly Napier, Ginny Osborne, Crystal Ritchie, Megan Turner, Joy Thornburg, Jacki Whitaker, Amber Whorrall, Coach Glenna Scott, and Parent Gail Campbell who volunteered their time to this worthwhile cause.
Wanda I. Mullins, Chairperson of the event, appreciates and thanks the Voice and WEKG/WJSN for the publicity, and Mayor Mike Miller and Glen Noble for their permission to have the event.
