The Breathitt County Bobcats close out the regular season at Mike Holcomb Stadium Friday night against the Knott Central Patriots. The Bobcats, coming off a disappointing loss to Middlesboro in a shootout last Friday night, need to win this game to solidify a second-place finish in the district standings. A win assures an opening round playoff game at home next weekend, more than likely against Leslie County. However, who knows what may happen in the topsy-turvy world of high school football.
If Leslie were to upset Middlesboro Friday night, a three-way tie for the district number one seed would exist between Breathitt, Leslie and Middlesboro. The tie-breaker format is too lengthy and complex to tackle in this story; consequently, we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it.
Monday, October 30th, 2006A “Roadblock” event was held Saturday, October 7, 2006, to raise funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Wanda I. Mullins was glad to report that $1,900, has been raised to help cancer research. $1,000 was collected from the Roadblock event alone. The other $900 came from local businesses and personal donations. During the past five years 83.7 percent of every dollar received by ALSAC/St. Jude has gone to the current or future needs of St. Jude. The hospital’s daily operating costs are $1,146,616, which are primarily covered by public contributions.
Monday, October 30th, 2006Carbondale, Ill. — Trailing by 11 points entering the fourth quarter after two special teams touchdowns put it in an early hole, the Western Kentucky University football team was 15 minutes from having its season come to a premature end for all intents and purposes — a fourth loss would have virtually eliminated the Hilltoppers from postseason consideration. However, senior Justin Haddix returned from a third-quarter knee injury to engineer a pair of touchdown drives in the final eight-plus minutes Saturday to give WKU a 27-24 come-from-behind Gateway Football Conference victory over No. 13 Southern Illinois at McAndrew Stadium, ending the Salukis’ three-game series win streak in the process. The Toppers improved to 4-3, 3-1 in the league, with their second straight victory after Haddix connected with Jake Gaebler for a 31-yard score and Lerron Moore closed out the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:20 remaining in the game. SIU (5-2, 2-2 GFC) fell for the second time in as many weeks. The defense helped set up a short field for the Toppers early in the fourth quarter when Jon Hedges’ sack of Nick Hill and a Scott Ravenesi 27-yard punt gave the ball back to WKU with 1st-and-10 at the SIU-48.

5K Road Run
You won’t see it on the golf course, or the baseball diamond, and definitely not on the football field…
But a unique and very special part of road runs is that runners of all ages can be out on the course at the same time—running for all they’re worth. Often you will hear them cheering each other on.

Cats Begin Stretch To Decide Bowl Eligibility & Brooks Future
Now that the football Cats bye week is behind us everyone in Wildcat Land has put the first half of the season behind them , some of it surprisingly good and some of it a little disappointing and one disaster. So far it all adds up to 3-4 in the record department . The best any rationale thinking prognosticator expected was 4-3 at this juncture in the season.
Monday, October 30th, 2006October 19, the SMS Ladycats were presented with their 14th Region shirts from Kelly Noble Jr., (member of the Breathitt County School Board). Along with Kelly Noble Jr. was Superintendent Arch Turner. The team was very appreciative of the two coming to congratulate them and bring them their shirts.

“What a great game! It’s just a shame we lost,” was the reaction of more than one fan who watched the Breathitt Co. Bobcats square off with the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets at Mike Holcomb Field last Friday evening in a game that more than likely determined the district championship. Middlesboro won 57 to 42 as the two offenses exploded for 99 total points. It could have been more.
Monday, October 30th, 2006Last Friday’s match up between Breathitt County and Middlesboro is what high school football is all about…a big crowd, two excellent teams, two marquee coaches, and much at stake. Of course I would’ve loved to have seen the Bobcats come out on top, but nonetheless, the game was very exciting to watch, win or lose.

In his second year as President of Morehead State University, Dr. Wayne Andrews says he’s seen some marvelous work being done at the school’s regional campuses, such as Morehead State University in Jackson. “It’s been a wonderful transition. We have communities trying to improve and we want to be part of that process,” said Dr. Andrews after he and some twenty five others on the MSU-Jackson Advisory Board had a luncheon meeting Tuesday. “It’s marvelous here in Jackson. In the last five years, we’ve seen tremendous increases in the number of courses and students. Most of all, the quality of community support has been tremendous.”
