Violence Prevention Council meets - resource guides now available
“You have the right to be protected” says the front of the newly-printed Resource Guide that was shown to members of the Breathitt-Wolfe Family Violence Prevention Council on Tuesday. The council contributed with information for the guide, which was sponsored by Kentucky River Community Care, Inc. and funded by a grant from the Kentucky Bar Association.
The booklet contains information on domestic violence, where to call or go to for help, and other important information on resources in Breathitt and neighboring counties. Copies are free, and are available at the Kentucky Department for Community-Based Services’ Protection and Permanency office on College Avenue; the ApppalRed Legal Services office on Highway 15; the Breathitt County Attorney’s Office in the Courthouse; and the Breathitt County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office inside the Judicial Center.
Prevention Council President Mildred Rogers thanked all those members who helped out with their booth at the recent Honey Festival, and outside the Holcomb Athletic Complex during the Honey Bowl football game. She also informed the group that their Candlelight Vigil service will be taking place on October 24th at 7 pm, in Douthitt Park. In addition to passing out the resource booklets, Denise Hoffman of KRCC/AVON told members that a puppet show with an anti-violence theme will be ready for the Breathitt Heritage Fair on Saturday, October 7th, and wanted to know who could volunteer with setting up the puppets as well as pass out information on the group.
Rogers reported that work on a custom gift basket filled with goodies was “progressing nicely, and that Eldon Miller had secured a tool box, to be filled with items for men.” Chances on both the basket and the tool box would continue to be sold, with the two being raffled off sometime next month. Two other community projects were in the planning stages, with one being a sewing project on a tablecloth, where people would make patches on how a person can go from an abusive home to a happy home. The other project would involve children making Christmas ornaments, possibly going on the trees at Douthitt Park for the holiday celebration in December.
The review of the minutes from the August meeting was approved, as was the financial report. Also brought up was the AppalRed 2006 Conference, to be held on October 13th at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg. Rogers and Hoffman urged all members to attend the conference, which will feature Gretchen Hunt of the Kentucky Division of Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Services. Before adjourning, the Family Violence Prevention Council agreed to meet again on Tuesday, October 17th at 12 Noon, at Jackson City Hall.
