It’s expected the bodies of seven members of a Texas family will all be recovered by today (Thursday) in the River Caney section of Breathitt County. First responders removed them from the rugged mountainside where their airplane crashed into on Monday, killing all aboard.
The twin-engine Cessna plane left Wichita Falls, Texas Monday morning at 8:50 a.m. CDT, en route to Wendell Ford Regional Airport north of Hazard. There they would spend a few days in Hazard, before going on to Northern Virginia, where the pilot’s stepdaughter would enroll in a boarding school. The plane never made it to the Hazard airport.

Last Christmas, Jeremy Napier’s mother got him a gift he thought he’d enjoy. Acting lessons.
He did enjoy them, and his determination and drive to strive placed him in high steed last month in New York City. He won seven awards at the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) Convention there, and he’s only twelve years old.

EditorThere’s a buzz around town every year at this time. Of live music and lots of good food. Where old and new friends go to the big game, or check out the parade the next day.
The Breathitt County Honey Festival - this year’s event marks the 29th annual one - has already begun to spread its wings over the past few days. It kicks into high gear this weekend in Downtown Jackson and other locations, with the height of the activity being tomorrow (Friday) through Sunday.

The Breathitt County Honey Festival has a new queen for 2006. Her name is Brittany Dana Moore.
The 16-year-old daughter of Damon and Brenda Moore of Snowden Branch is a senior at Breathitt High School, and is a Governor’s Scholar, having spent part of this summer at the scholars’ retreat at Centre College in Danville. After winning the pageant at LBJ Elementary School, she was still surprised by the outcome. “Well, I didn’t think I was going to get anything. I was shocked, really shocked. I still can’t believe it.” Then after taking a deep breath, Brittany continued. “It feels good to represent the Honey Festival this year. And I can thank my sister for it. She was the main reasons I was in it. She encouraged me.”
Thursday, August 31st, 2006Council learned from Mayor Mike Miller last Thursday that weather permitting, the section of Main and Brown Streets where construction has been going on will be paved in time for this weekend’s Honey Festival.

FRANKFORT - Kathy Carter was sipping on a bottle of pop at the VFW Post last Friday. Inside the big room, a crowd of about 50 was finishing a lunch of bologna sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, moon pies and your choice of RC Cola, Red Pop or orange soda. She put the bottle down, smiled and said, “That Red Pop is good. I love it. It brings back lots of memories.”
Thursday, August 31st, 2006Pikeville College played their first game of the season against George Mason University. Brad Allen was a team captain-first time at coin toss and first game at center. He never had played that position before, never throughout grade school-high school.
Chip English returning QB starter, started the game. Coach planned to let Jacob start 2nd quarter. English made several completions to Justin Lamb. Lamb made one driving, spectacular catch.

With four minutes gone in the 3rd quarter, Madison Central scored to cut the Breathitt Bobcat lead to 13-12. Bobcat defenders Chris Spicer and Houston Noble sacked the Eagle quarterback on the ensuing try-for-two and the Bobcats held on to the lead. Breathitt then went on a rampage outscoring Madison Southern 26-0 in the next twenty minutes as the Bobcats won 39-12 and raised their season record to 2-0.

(Mountain High School Football Enters 3rd Week) One of my favorite sports quotes of all time comes to mind as I write this weekly column tonight about the opening of another UK football season. John Madden, the former Oakland Raider coach who now is the star of NBC’s Sunday Night NFL broadcasting crew once said at the beginning of a Raider season, ” We can’t worry about the horse being blind anymore, it’s time to load the wagon and see how far down the road he’ll take us ” . So, with that being said it’s time to pick a QB, Rich Brooks, and see how far he can take the Wildcats and Rich Brooks coaching career into the future.
It’s just a gut feeling but I think it will be 6′ 5″ Jr. Andre Woodson. By the way don’t put any trust in this weeks coach’s comments from either side. When the Cats get the ball this Sunday for the first time we’ll know.
Thursday, August 31st, 2006Bowling Green, Ky. — A quartet of seniors were named captains of the Western Kentucky University football team this year, head coach David Elson announced Sunday. Justin Haddix, Lerron Moore, Sam Sexton and Tariq Smith were voted on by the team at a pre-practice meeting Friday. Haddix, a native of Jackson, is the only player on this year’s roster to start every contest during Elson’s first three seasons as head coach, as he enters his final campaign as the school’s all-time leader with a 55.4 completion percentage and a 137.29 pass efficiency rating. He also is among the top three in the WKU record books in total offense yards (6,679), completions (370), passing yards (5,743) and touchdowns through the air (36). Haddix accounted for 23 scores last fall — 15 passing and eight on the ground, both career-high totals — while leading the Hilltoppers for the third straight year with 2,220 yards of total offense. A Columbus, Ohio, resident, Moore begins 2006 just 493 yards shy of setting the school’s all-time rushing standard. He has run for more than 1,000 yards in two of his first three years on the Hill, including collecting 1,037 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 appearances last season to earn first-team all-Gateway Football Conference honors — Moore ranked in the top 10 on the league in rushing (second), all- purpose (ninth) and total offense (10th) yards. Moore is among the all-time leaders at WKU with 34 rushing touchdowns, 17 100-yard games and 204 total points. Sexton collected career highs with 33 total tackles and 3½ stops behind the line of scrimmage a year ago, also forcing two fumbles and adding a fumble recovery that he returned 21 yards for a touchdown at nationally ranked Youngstown State. The Ferguson, Ky., native has posted 64 stops, including eight for loss with 3½ sacks, and a pass broken up in 34 appearances his first three seasons on the Hill. Smith, who hails from Memphis, Tenn., is in his fifth year at WKU. He sat out as a redshirt in 2002 and also missed the ’04 campaign after suffering a season-ending injury in preseason camp. Last year the wide receiver appeared in nine contests, seeing action mostly with the Toppers’ special teams units.WKU opens the year at I-A Georgia on Saturday, with kickoff slated for 11:30 a.m. (CDT).
