Smith, Lemons in School Board Race
As the heat of July begins to pick up, so are the candidates beginning to file for races in the city of Jackson. A newcomer to the political scene has filed for City Council, while two well-known faces are running for seats on the Jackson Independent School Board.
Incumbent board member Dr. Donna Snell Smith filed for her seat last week at the Breathitt County Court Clerk’s Office, as did local banker Greg Lemons. Three of the five “at large”seats on the board are up for grabs this November, with the other seats contested being held by incumbents Sheretta Haddix and John Gambill.
In the City Council race, teacher Jason E. Hall filed last Thursday to run for a seat. It’s his first attempt at elected office, and that brings the number running for council to five. Four incumbents - Mildred Rogers, Steve Bowling, Rose Wolfe and Alfred Turner - announced their re-election efforts last week. All six seats in the council are being contested this November, with the winners serving two-year terms. In addition, city voters will elect a mayor this fall.
It’s expected that more candidates will announce in the weeks ahead, not just for the City Council and City School Board races, but for the seats open in the Breathitt County School Board. The deadline to file is August 12th, with the General Election set for Tuesday, November 7th.
