Few team sports allow for specialized participation as does the game of football, as is best exemplified by the kicking game. Some have said that the gridiron game can be segmented into three components—offense, defense, and kicking; all of which are equally important.
Thursday, June 29th, 2006I know that stereotyping people is a bad habit and not really fair at all. We’re taught from a very early age that “everyone is unique” and to make generalized blanket statements about any one subculture is narrowminded. We (by “we” I am referring to Eastern Kentuckians) should know this as well as anyone since we have long been typecast as an ignorant, inbred and illiterate bunch of people, who are either too poor, too scared, or too unintelligent to venture outside of the familiararity of the mountains. How many times have you found yourself faced with the question “Do you all wear shoes down there?” or “Is your sister your cousin?”
Thursday, June 29th, 2006Last week was a very busy time for me. I spent the whole week from Sunday until Friday at UK participating, for the second year, in Girls in Research Camp. Last week I decided to write this article a little bit every day. I would like to tell you about my time at camp.
Thursday, June 29th, 2006What’s bugging you? I thought we might get through a summer without seeing the Japanese beetles but they seem to have arrived. They’ve gotten later and later each year for the past several years, and word is that they are moving farther north so maybe eventually they won’t be a bother to us. But for now, they are here.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006A Jackson businessman and his former wife have filed a civil suit against the state Highway Department, the state Transportation Cabinet and the Cabinet’s current leader. Filed in Breathitt County Circuit Court on June 5th, the suit involves property they own that’s in the path of the new four-lane KY 15.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006America loves their cars and trucks. Especially if they’re classics, like a ‘66 Mustang or a ‘57 Chevy. And they like ‘em souped up with mag wheels, big engines and lots of chrome. Breathitt Countians love them too, and last Friday at Douthitt Park they came to see 41 motor machines (38 cars and trucks and three motorcycles). It was the Breathitt County Rodders Car Club holding their monthly “CruZin the Park” event, and it made for good looking on a warm June evening.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006Every year a group of volunteers from places like Wisconsin, California and Ohio come our way to help those who need a helping hand. They make repairs to homes that are much-needed, and they touch lives in the process. This year is no exception, as the Appalachian Service Project sets up their camp at Jackson City School.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006When Howard Moore of South Jackson entered the Voice office Monday afternoon, he was asked by a staff member if he was indeed the man who won the newspaper’s Father’s Day Contest.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006In Breathitt County last year, some 525 cases of child abuse were reported to authorities. That doesn’t include the incidents involving spousal abuse and elderly abuse in the county. But what Monday evening’s Public Forum on domestic violence hopes to bring to the table is information on what to look for in possible abusive behavior and where to find help.
Thursday, June 22nd, 2006Members of the Arrowood family met at the Breathitt County Museum on Saturday afternoon for a special ceremony.
